A LEICESTERSHIRE woman has spoken out about her wait to see whether or not her husband is to be executed on America's Death Row.Mother-of-two Mrs Glenda Tompkins began writing to half Cherokee indian Grey Cloud - whose white name is Wayne Tompkins - nearly six years ago.
In April this year, following five visits to the Florida prison where he is held for murder, she married him.
Tompkins was convicted of murdering the daughter of the woman he was living with.
Now she is awaiting news of his final appeal against conviction - and whether or not he will be sent to the electric chair.
"The final appeal can go a number of ways - he could either be re-sentenced, have his sentence confirmed, or they could order a new trial. But if that happens he will basically be released because it will mean they agree that the conviction was unsafe," said Mrs Tompkins, from Shackerstone.
"If he is re-sentenced he will probably get life imprisonment, which is 25 years there. Its the other option I cant bear to think about. We write to each other every week and you can sense the fear in his letters.
"He maintains he didn't do it, and when you read the legal papers you can see it wasn't a safe conviction.".
She said that at the moment she had the education of her two teenage sons to think about, but if Wayne was given life imprisonment she would eventually move to Florida to be closer to him.
"People talk about the death penalty but I dont think you can really understand it until you're talking about a specific person you know," she said.
