HOLLYWOOD,
Fla. (AP) - A retarded man, released from prison last week after
spending nearly 12 years in custody for murdering a Broward County
sheriff's deputy, has taken his first steps back into society.
Timothy Brown, 27, attended church services at Koinonia Worship
Center on Sunday. Brown was freed last week on $5,000 bond, nearly
two months after a judge overturned his conviction and determined a
jury would not have returned a guilty verdict based on evidence
available today.
"He met all of the deacons and had a wonderful time," said his
stepmother, Othalean Brown. "He thought it was great to be able to
get out of the house."
Deputy Patrick Behan was fatally shot in 1990 while sitting in
his patrol car outside a Pembroke Park convenience store, writing a
report. Brown was 14 at the time of the murder; he was 15 by the
time he was arrested along with a friend, months after the shooting.
He said he falsely confessed under physical and psychological
pressure from detectives.
Brown went to the church service with an electronic monitoring
device on his ankle, a condition of his house arrest. He will remain
on house arrest until prosecutors choose whether they will retry him
on the murder charge, a decision that is due next month.
