JEB BUSH SIGNS DEATH WARRANTS TO CAMPAIGN ON THE DEATH
PENALTY
In spite of the fact that Florida's death penalty statute is
currently
under scrutiny by the Florida Supreme Court, Governor Jeb Bush has
just
signed death warrants for two prisoners who have waived their appeals
and
are volunteering to be executed.
"There is only one reason Jeb
Bush signed death warrants for Aileen Wournos
and Rigoberto
Sanchez-Velasco," said Abe Bonowitz, Director of Floridians
for Alternatives
to the Death Penalty (FADP). "The Governor has a history
of
campaigning on his support for the death penalty. This is a transparent
and crass political move at a time when Mr. Bush knows that the courts will
issue stays in both cases."
Florida's death penalty laws are in
question as the Florida Supreme Court
scrutinizes the full ramifications of
the US Supreme Court's recent
decision in Ring V. Arizona. The Florida
Supreme Court heard arguments in
the Bottoson and King cases last month
after issuing stays of the death
warrants Bush signed immediately after the
US Supreme Court decision in
Ring failed to explicitly disallow Florida's
death penalty statute.
Last February, Governor Bush did the right thing
by staying the scheduled
execution of Robert Trease, also a volunteer, when
it became clear that the
courts could invalidate Florida's death penalty
statute.
"The only difference between the situation then and the
situation now is
that Jeb Bush is gearing up for a tough re-election
campaign," said
Bonowitz. "Florida's death penalty system is
broken. We lead the nation
in wrongful convictions, and the Governor
is in denial about the fact that
it is time for a "Time-Out" on
executions."
